Cures For Depression

By Jackson Katz

Because there are many forms of depression, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression without even realizing it. According to recent studies, estimates show that at least 14 million Americans suffer from depression. It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment.

Why do many who suffer never solicit help? Well, there was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. It was common to lock away people in facilities for the mentally ill when they exhibited signs of depression. Maybe it's due to the fact that depression is considered a mental illness. Nobody wants that label applied to them. Although times have changed, the old stererotype still exists. This influences many Americans to keep their illness to themselves.

Diagnosing depression is not straightforward. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. There are also many causes of depression such as drug or alcohol abuse or even simple everyday stress. These elements and more can lead to depression.

In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated? Not to sound like a broken record, but there are many options to cure depression similar to there being many factors that can cause depression. Each individual case needs to be evaluated in order to determine the best treatment option.

Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. Here are some of the factors considered when these options are examined. Has the treatment been clinically proven to be effective for depression? Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards? For treatments using prescription drugs or herbal supplements, does it contain the appropriate and safe amounts of ingredients? Below is a discussion of some of the typical treatment methods.

Prescription drugs and psychotherapy, combined, has been a common treatment for many forms of depression. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. First used in the U.S. in 1988, Prozac has become on of the most common. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that have followed it. All have been proven to be effective.

These drugs do have a lot of side effects, though. That is why natural cures are becoming so popular today. St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly. To be effective it must contain around 3-5% hyperforin. Studies and actual cases show it to be as effective as Prozac but with fewer side effects. Seeking a cure is important, but so is convincing people to get help. If you or someone you know suffers from depression seek medical attention immediately. - 16004
