Panic Attack Remedies - Which Ones Really Work?

By Stephen Jablonski

Stopping a panic attack after it's started is not an easy task. Mostly, you have to ride it out, stay calm, and lean on your experience. Certain drugs can provide immediate relief, but they usually have some severe side effects. So the question is, what types of panic attack remedies truly work? Here are some real ones that do.

Let's start with exercise. A consistent program of exercise can give you the upper hand on panic and anxiety. Regular aerobic exercise lowers your resting heart rate and generally makes you feel better about yourself. Both of these buffer you against panic attacks. And the great thing is you don't have to be an unbelievable athlete to enjoy the benefits. You simply have to get out there and do something.

Watch your caffeine and alcohol intake. These are drugs in their own right and they can have serious effects on your mood. Too much coffee for instance can put you right on the edge of a panic attack. Alcohol too can set your mood spinning. So be careful with these or any other substances that may adversely affect your mood.

Add some natural remedies to your daily diet. There are many non-drug substances available at health food stores that have calming and healing effects, especially herbal teas. Everyone's heard about Chamomile's sedative properties, but other teas like Lemon Balm and Passion Flower have calming effects as well. Find one that you enjoy and relax over a cup once a day.

Learn one or two stress management or relaxation techniques. There are many techniques that can be done throughout the day that are short and to the point. Even if it's a yoga cleansing breath done a few times a day, it can be very effective. Other methods like learning how to meditate or listening to guided imagery tapes or CDs are equally effective.

Begin including more activites in your life that you actually enjoy. Make plans every week, to do something and follow through. As an example, maybe you enjoy eating out, well then set up a regular "date" and go to one of your favorite restaurants every week. The important point here is that you're doing something you enjoy and when you're having fun, you're usually anxiety free.

Open up a line of communication. Talk to somebody about what you're going through. You don't have to make an appointment with a counseling professional; it can be as non-formal as just hanging out with your best friend. But getting your worries off your chest is an extremely effective way of reducing your stress.

In today's world, you have options. You don't have to rely on drugs or drug therapy as your only option for anxiety relief. You can take active steps to improve your situation by changing habits and behaviors. You can make real progress in your life and find your own panic attack remedies that help chase panic away for good. - 16004
