What to Know Before You Buy a Diet Pill

By Cal Stevens

It almost seems that a new diet pill pops up nearly everyday now. Each one assures you that they have found the new secret to weight loss. You also hear that a lot of diet pills are scams and some are even being charged by the FTC. So how can you determine for yourself which diet pills are legitimate and will work for you? I've found that if you start your research focused on four areas, that you'll be able to quickly choose the right diet pill for you. These four areas are: the ingredients of the diet pill, the company that produces the diet pill, the price of the product, and the money back guarantee.

What is the one and only factor that really determines if a diet pill will actually work for you? The ingredients. Once that diet pill enters your mouth, the ingredients are the only thing that sets one pill apart from another. And while this seems like an obvious statement, I'm continually amazed at how many consumers put more importance on how convincing the infomercial is or which celebrity is endorsing the product. If you want to know if I diet pill is effective, you must research the ingredients (and the amounts of those ingredients) that are actually in the diet pill. Avoid proprietary blends which hide the amounts of the ingredients included. When researching, look for clinical studies that have been peer-reviewed and published. Go directly to the source. If the source of they study isn't cited, don't believe it. Researching ingredients really isn't that difficult, but if you want a good start, I've reviewed most of the common diet pill ingredients at Criticalorie.com to help you in your journey (and yes, I've cited all the research that I've used in my assessments).

Another area of importance when choosing the right diet pill is the company who makes the pills. The diet pill industry is one that attracts a lot of people trying to make a quick buck. Many of the companies out there use marketing tactics that are less than ethical. Make sure you find out if the company has been in any trouble with FTC (for making false claims, etc.). This is a big red flag. Another good resource are the complaint boards on the internet. If a company has ripped someone off before, you can bet that there will be some complaints about it (a good search is 'Company Name or Product Name complaints'). A company with poor business practices isn't very likely to produce a quality diet pill. And even if they produce a good pill, it's difficult to recommend them because of these practices.

Another aspect that is worth noting is the price of the diet pill. If you spend near nothing for the product, you can probably expect near nothing in terms of results. On the other hand, however, don't go buying the most expensive thing you can find either. A good diet pill will usually cost you anywhere from $40 to $70 per bottle. If you spend much more than this, chances are the diet pill company is making money hand over fist. As always, watch out for scams that seem too good to be true.

As far as the money back guarantee goes, I like to see anything over 60 days. Most diet pills either don't have guarantees or they only offer a 30 day guarantee (which isn't really enough time to judge the efficacy of the diet pill). If a company doesn't stand behind their product and offer to give you your money back if it doesn't work, it's usually a good sign that the diet pill probably isn't very effective. There are certainly enough diet pills on the market to make a would-be consumer's head spin. But with a little diligent research you can effectively determine which diet pills will work for you. If you have questions about a specific product, please let me know. - 16004
