Chiropractic: Chronic Low Back Pain

By Robert Walcher D.C.

The Extreme Effects of Low Back Pain

If you've ever witnessed someone suffering from the agony of extreme lower back pain, or if you yourself have experienced it, you know how debilitating it can be. It hurts to lean over, to straighten up, to get in and out of bed, or in and out of the car - or even rising from a chair. You are constantly grabbing at your lower back to somehow lessen the pain or to stop the spasms.

The lumbar region of the back, also referred to as the lower back is responsible for supporting a plethora of normal and important bodily movements. The lumbar or lower back provides structural support, aids in movement and protects vital body tissues. Perhaps most importantly, as we stand or walk, the lower back functions to support the greater weight of the body. Just about every movement we make from bending, extending or rotating the waist implies mobility from the lower back. When pain affects this region the results can be that normal activities are greatly limited.

Interacting Problems

Back pain can be caused by a number of situations. Simple things like overuse or muscle strain can combine with injuries to the ligaments, muscles and discs which cause symptomatic lower back pain. Even more frustrating is that with lower back pain one problem may quickly lead to another. For instance muscle strain in the area can persist and end up leaving the person with a misalignment in the spinal structure.

Lower back pain is categorized as either acute (a recent occurrence) or chronic (the patient has suffered the pain for an extended time). This type of strain usually happens to people in their forties or older. However, certain injuries to the lower back can happen at any age.

For most of us, lower back pain accumulates over many years of neglect and abuse. Eventually the lower back will be unable to hold out and chronic pain will begin.

Adjusting the Lower Back

As with many painful conditions, most people begin their own treatment by taking pain medication. While this may provide temporary relief, it ignores the root cause, therefore, the problem is sure to reoccur, and perhaps with more severity.

Seeking the services of a chiropractor is an effective way to treat that root cause. Chiropractic treatment includes, among other things, a spinal adjustment. This adjustment is designed to return motion to an abnormally locked (fixated) spinal joint that is in some way causing pain and discomfort.

If you are considering a surgical intervention, you should use a sense of deep caution. Surgery should be a last resort. By visiting the chiropractor you will be able to save time, money and possibly the risk of surgery. Studies undoubtedly conclude that a chiropractor can alleviate pain and pressure and allow their patients an extended amount of permanent relief. Most people who use chiropractic care regularly benefit from improved overall health and quicker, more permanent recoveries.

Approaching the health of the human body should be done as a whole. It is not necessary to rely on pain medications or prescription drugs to feel well. Chiropractic treatment can gift you with the pain free future void of the side effects from harmful pharmaceuticals. The results will last a lifetime. - 16004
