Makeup Application is Key to a Natural Look

By Marilyn Etzel

How can women wear makeup and gain enhanced looks while still appearing natural? The answer to that question seems to be mineral makeup. Using ground minerals from the earth creates that illusion and keeps the skin looking good. Best of all, mineral makeup can be matched to just about all skin tones.

There are plenty of choices these days when it comes to choosing a mineral cosmetic product to use. Your final decision of which company's cosmetics to use depends on you and your tastes. All mineral makeup is not just minerals. Some contain fillers that can be harmless or cause skin irritations.

You'll be pleased to know that mineral cosmetics include all of the essential makeup products: concealer, eye shadow, blush, and foundation. Even though mineral makeup was created to look natural, if applied wrong, your face will look "cakey." Avoid the clumps with a few makeup tips for getting it right.

The first makeup essential that is applied to your face is the foundation. Its purpose is implied in the name. Foundation prepares your face for the rest of the makeup. It is like preparing a canvas before you paint. The rest of the makeup looks better when foundation is applied.

Before applying any makeup, get your face in the best shape possible. Clean your face as usual to remove any dirt and oil. If your skin tends to be on the dry side, don't forget to moisturize. The moisturizer must soak in and feel dry before adding makeup.

Mineral foundation can be applied to the skin in a dry or wet preparation. First, you will learn how to apply mineral foundation on dry skin.

Applying Dry Mineral Foundation

1. When opening a new jar of mineral foundation, shake it gently to loosen the minerals. Dump a small amount of the foundation on a clean surface like the jar's lid.

2. Using a Kabuki brush (sold wherever mineral makeup is sold), dip the bristles into the makeup. You won't need much of it to use on your face. Tap the handle of the brush against the lid with the bristles facing upwards. This spreads the mineral foundation throughout the bristles of the brush as well as removing any extra from the brush.

3. Apply mineral foundation from jaw line to forehead in a circular manner. When it comes to your nose, brush downward on the nose and out across the cheeks. Apply in strokes under the chin and along the neck.

4. Continue to move around your face and neck until the coverage is even and the minerals mix in completely with your skin.

Applying Wet Mineral Makeup

1. Some women like using a liquid foundation instead. That's okay. Mineral makeup is adaptable for this purpose. Just like with dry foundation, dump a small amount (about the size of a dime) of the foundation onto a clean surface like the lid of the jar.

2. Using a spray bottle filled with water, squirt a few drops of water onto the foundation. Mix the two together using a Kabuki brush. Application can start when the mixture reaches the right consistency for you.

3. Apply in circular strokes to your jaw line. Don't neglect your neck and under the chin. For the middle of the face, apply to the eyelids, go down the nose, and come out across the cheeks. Because the foundation is wet, it may take more strokes to achieve even coverage.

Following the steps above for dry or wet mineral foundation application will result in a natural look to your skin and a canvas ready for whatever you apply next. - 16004
